MYSTIC — Firefighters responded to a massive fire Sunday evening in a building on the edge of the Mystic River, according to authorities.

Crews were dispatched around 9 p.m. Sunday to the area of Willow and Washington streets, according to the Groton Police Department.

A police official said the fire had grown since crews arrived, but said no other details were immediately available, including where exactly the blaze began and if anyone was injured. The area is home to the Noank Shipyard and Seaport Marine, a popular attraction at the mouth of the river.

The Old Mystic Fire Department shared photos on Facebook showing massive flames and smoke shooting from the Seaport Marine building into the night sky. The agency said two engines, along with a tower ladder, were used to help control the blaze.

Crews were released from the scene around 2 a.m. Monday, according to the Old Mystic Fire Department.

State police confirmed Monday morning they’re assisting in the investigation, but directed other questions to the Mystic fire marshal.
